“Capstone is not only about football” By: Mark Guyther
When you hear the word Capstone this time of the year you typically think of Alabama Crimson Tide Football. But let me tell you about another Capstone that will definitely make you think of challenging golf. Located just minutes outside of Tuscaloosa in Brookwood, The Capstone club is one of Alabama’s most interesting and challenging golf courses around.
"This will be a course that reveres and respects the traditions of the game, while producing a great experience for the golfer. It will be traditional in all its trappings- a clear reflection of the proud heritage of tradition.”
That’s what the course architect Gil Hanse had to say about Capstone club before he designed it and he held true to his word. Ranked 3rd in the State of Alabama by Golfweek Magazine, the Capstone Club of Alabama is a must play. This amazing layout is challenging and fun for everyone. The pristine golf course features 18 of the most distinctive golf holes not only in Alabama but in the country. This course has some of the most challenging golf holes you will find anywhere. From the back tees (fittingly named the crimson tees) this course measure 7,032 yards and plays to a par of 71. Capstone Club has plush bent grass greens and tiff-sport Bermuda fairways.
Some of the many features of this unique golf course is the generous fairways which provide you with enough landing area to hit your driver from most every tee, large greens that hold well and four par 3’s that will challenge any golfers iron game. There are several tough challenges you will face from the Capstone including an elevated sloping green on number 2 which requires a precise shot into this green or your ball could end up back down the bottom of the hill leaving you with a blind shot back to the flagstick. Although this course does provide you with generous landing areas in the fairway you need to be consistent with your tee shots or you will find yourself in some tough wooded areas that is almost impossible to save par from. There are also several blind tee shots that will require a look at the fairway before you actually hit your tee shot.
Overall the Capstone club is one of the most challenging and unique golf courses in the state of Alabama. I highly recommend taking a trip to T-town and tee it up for a golfing experience you won’t soon forget. This course will bring out the best in your game and present you with a new test on each hole.
In closing I must mention the amazing clubhouse which stands out as soon as you drive into the parking lot of the Capstone Club. This clubhouse is the perfect setting for hosting golf tournaments, banquets, corporate outings or any type function you may have.
